After giving it a couple of months to cool off at the request of the devs themselves, I pulled the trigger on Helldivers II yesterday. I have two thoughts.
- I absolutely get the hype.
- Goddamn, I wish Graham was around to play this with.
It’s the exact sort of stupid fun shooter that appeals immensely and would’ve gone over incredibly well. The visceral feel of explosions and the sell-dead ragdolling are just so good together. The polish of the humor, so straight-faced as it provides this absurd narrative, is just fucking delightful. The emotes and other surreal touches to the game are just so well put together.
I was on a mission with 4 random dudes to launch an ICBM. It’s quite a sequence to get it in the air, and once the final countdown began, I stood by it and saluted it as the clock hit zero.
Massive fucking explosion, dead, send in another Helldiver. It was complete perfection. I will do it every single time.
